September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Celebrations take place around the world.
For over 65 years UNESCO has worked to ensure that literacy remains a priority on national and international agendas. Through its formal and non-formal literacy programmes worldwide, the Organization works to realize the vision of a literate world for all.
International Literacy Day 2015 is being celebrated worldwide, bringing together governments, multi-and bi-lateral organizations, NGOs, the private sectors, communities, teachers, learners and experts. As per UNESCO eAtlas of Literacy, India’s literacy rate for the year 2011 is 86% according to which our nation has been ranked 114 among 158 countries around the world.
Gross enrollment ratio for Pre-primary education in India is 58.1% i.e. over every 100 kids of age group 2-6 years only 58 kids are getting enrolled for Pre-school education. Lets support UNESCO for the initiative to promote literacy by encouraging people to opt Pre-school education for their child as this is the stage of formation of bright future for Bright minds.
